Talk: 'What about our boys?'
What does it mean today to be a “man”? It depends on who you ask, but stereotypes would suggest it means being stoic and unemotional, having physical strength and being a protector – a “real man” doesn’t show weakness or express feelings. Is this really the example we want to share with our growing boys? Research shows that these traditional expectations of masculinity can have harmful consequences. Men are far less likely than women to seek mental health support and far more likely to commit violent crimes. Men also have higher rates of suicide.
In this talk, Dr Neil Forrest (an Osler Health Family Physician for many teenagers) and Emma Waddington (a clinical psychologist from US Therapy) will pose the question, “What about the boys?” There has been, rightly, an intense focus on teenage girls recently, but perhaps we need to give boys some attention too. The talk will cover role models, hormonal changes, unique challenges, toxic masculinity, navigating risk, developing sexuality and teen behaviour, among other topics. Join us!
